Update on FSWC program

CIC announced further updates on the upcoming launch of the Federal Skilled Worker Class (FSWC) on May 4, 2013. The updates relate to the 3 awaited criteria for FSWC:
 
1. Occupation List: The CIC has announced that it will accept FSWC Applications from Applicants who have experience in at least one of the occupations on the Priority List. The Priority List has 24 occupations, as follows:
  • Engineering managers
  • Financial and investment analysts
  • Geoscientists and oceanographers
  • Civil engineers
  • Mechanical engineers
  • Chemical engineers
  • Mining engineers
  • Geological engineers
  • Petroleum engineers
  • Aerospace engineers
  • Computer engineers (except software engineers/designers)
  • Land surveyors
  • Computer programmers and interactive media developers
  • Industrial instrument technicians and mechanics
  • Inspectors in public and environmental health and occupational health and safety
  • Audiologists and speech-language pathologists
  • Physiotherapists
  • Occupational Therapists
  • Medical laboratory technologists
  • Medical laboratory technicians and pathologists’ assistants
  • Respiratory therapists, clinical perfusionists and cardiopulmonary technologists
  • Medical radiation technologists
  • Medical sonographers
  • Cardiology technicians and electrophysiological diagnostic technologists, n.e.c. (not elsewhere classified)

2. Cap on number of Applications: The number of Applications to be accepted under the FSWC program will be restricted to 5000 in a year. Further, there will be an occupation-wise cap of 300 applications.

3. Educational Credential Assessment: CIC has identified the Canadian organizations, that have been designated to complete the Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) for the FSWC Application. 3 organizations have been identified for general occupations. It appears that the 4th organization (Medical Council of Canada) will have a very extremely limited application, as  it can only be used for medical professionals, who are not on the list.

The above updates are NOT applicable to 2 groups of applicants:

  • Applicants with a valid Offer of Arranged Employment in Canada
  • Applicants with a Ph.D. from a Canadian University.
