Citizenship Rule changes implemented

Canadian Citizenship Rules – 2017

IRCC is implementing the 2nd batch of changes to Canadian Citizenship rules, effective October 11, 2017.

The following are some of the major changes are already in effect since June, 2017:

  • Requirement to intend to continue to live in Canada if granted citizenship – Removed.
  • Revocation provisions for Dual citizens – removed
  • Minors can apply for citizenship without a Canadian parent

The changes in effect from October 11 are as follows:

  • Physical presence requirement reduced to 3 out of 5 years
  • Annual physical presence days requirement – Removed.
  • Credit for days spent in Canada before becoming PR – reinstated
  • Must have filed Canadian Income Tax for 3 out of last 5 years
  • Age for Knowledge and Language test – Reduced to 18 – 54 age group
